Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, he graduated from the University of Louisville's School of Dental Medicine, a facility for training physicians and dentists. He maintained a successful private practice in Louisville for five years, but Florida's pleasant climate and the promise of year-round outside activities brought the Apels to the sunshine state.
